Presidents of Mexico and Guatemala Discuss Border Agenda Suzanne Stephens Waller - Presidencia de la República go to original October 27, 2010
Cartagena de Indias, Colombia - President Felipe Calderón attended a working meeting with Guatemalan president Álvaro Colom Caballeros during their participation in the 12th Heads of State and Government Summit for the Tuxtla Dialogue and Agreement Mechanism, held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
During the meeting, the Presidents of Mexico and Guatemala discussed the main issues on the border, bilateral and regional agenda.
They reviewed the state of the modernization of the border crossings between the two countries, not only to achieve safe, orderly migratory flows but also to speed up trade.
They also highlighted the importance of continuing to combine efforts to intensify and improve the exchange of information in the fight against transnational crime and boost actions to protect migrants.
President Colom also thanked President Calderón for promoting electric interconnections between the two countries.
They discussed the Conference of the Parties to the United National Convention on COP/16, to be held in late November and early December in Cancún, Quintana Roo. President Colom expressed his gratitude to and firm support of the Mexican government's efforts to achieve specific advances in the fight against climate change.
Lastly, in the sphere of regional integration, the two Presidents pledged to continue advancing towards the negotiation of a single Free Trade Agreement between Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica.
President Calderón also thanked the Guatemalan president for his presence at the Mexican Independence Bicentennial festivities, an important ceremony for Mexicans.
