US Deports Record Number of Immigrants The News go to original October 07, 2010
| This year the DHS sent 392,000 immigrants home. | | Washington – United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano and mmigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director John Morton announced Wednesday that the U.S. had deported a record number of immigrants, 392,000, in fiscal year 2010.
According to a DHS announcement, “half of those removed – more than 195,000 – were convicted criminals. The fiscal year 2010 statistics represent increases of more than 23,000 removals overall and 81,000 criminal removals compared to fiscal year 2008–a more than 70 percent increase in removal of criminal aliens from the previous administration.”
The announcement very clearly highlighted deported immigrants’ criminal ties and avoided mentioning immigrants’ origins at a time when tensions are running high between the U.S. and Latin American countries regarding immigration.
Arizona’s polemical SB 1070 law was enacted in April, only to have its most extreme measures quickly shot down in court. Earlier this week, the Associated Press reported that eleven Latin American countries are asking to file “friend-of-the-court” briefs in the Arizona governor’s appeal of this case.
The DHS credits its expanded Secure Communities initiative with helping to boost its deportation numbers. The initiative uses “biometric information and services to identify and remove criminal aliens in state prisons and local jails,” according to the announcement.
In 2008, the initiative involved just 14 jurisdictions, while today it involves 660, including all jurisdictions along the Southwest border. The DHS is on track to expand this program to all law enforcement jurisdictions nationwide by 2013.
