The Los Mangos fundraiser at Villa Leonarda on November 19th was a wonderful night under the stars - and all for a good cause. (photos by Sylvie Scopazzo)
Friday night, November 19, was a party not to be missed! Just down the street from where I live is a Villa called Villa Leonarda. This is not just any villa; we are talking a historical site! Apart from being one of the many villas first built in Vallarta, it was also the hang out for local artists and celebrities in the 60's.

Located in Gringo Gulch and around the corner from Casa Kimberly where Elizabeth Taylor once lived, John Huston and other famous people could be found playing poker there. I can only imagine what went on in that villa in the 60's!

The party was about raising money for Los Mangos Library. The gorgeous courtyard was filled with the "who's who" and the "not so who's" of Vallarta. There was a nice mix of wonderful people, eating and drinking, smiling and dancing. Some dressed to the nines and others dressed in ripped jeans and worn out sneakers. You have to love Vallarta for that.

The cover charge was $100 pesos with drinks and food costing only $50 pesos. It was a very affordable evening with all proceeds going to the Los Mangos Library. Benitto's Deli had their stand offering delicious and great portioned Paninis as well as Xocodiva with their amazing, and addictive, chocolates!

The highlight of the evening, I have to say, was the angelic sounds of an opera singer. The DJ played some great dancing music also, but when the music stopped and a soprano voice came out of nowhere singing Ave Maria, I turned to mush.

As I looked up to the balcony, I was surprised to see a male singer. His name is Gabriel Degadillo and he is from Tepic, Nayarit. We spent some time chatting afterwards, and it turns out he is a self taught singer who sings to release stress. His voice is truly a gift.

The rest of the evening was about touring the Villa. The entire place was open to the public and every room was spectacular. One of the rooms was turned into a boutique which had several items of clothing and art for sale. Painter, Sonia Contreras had a beautiful painting up for sale as well.

Another highlight was the movie projector showing the film, Night of the Iguana. The interesting thing about this was that the film was not projected on a screen but inside the pool! What a great effect.

All in all, it was a wonderful night under the stars - and all for a good cause.
