Calderón: 'There's Political Will in Congress' Carmen Martínez Jiménez - The News go to original November 26, 2010
| Calderón recognizes the work of the legislators | | Mexico City – The creation of the Prevention and Attention to Natural Disasters Program is proof of the willingness of the different political parties in Congress to cooperate and work together, President Felipe Calderón said on Thursday.
Attending the presentation of the Prevention and Attention to Natural Disasters Program were the coordinators of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), the National Action Party (PAN), the Convergence Party, the New Alliance Party, and the Green Party.
“I want to reiterate my gratitude to all of you. I want to give my sincere recognition to the agreements reached in Congress.... The truth is that there are agreements and political will (in Congress),” Calderón said.
However, it is also true that not all parties get what they want, he continued, but that is the purpose of negotiation and compromise: to reach a common agreement and through that agreement promote values and create public services.
Speaking alongside the governors of the states that were affected by torrential rains a few weeks ago, Calderón recognized the deputies and senators and said that their work was responsible and little understood.
“Their arduous and little understood work... has proved that it is possible to reach agreements and it is possible to create public services with these agreements, as is the case of the Disaster Prevention Fund,” Calderón said.
On this note, the president said that the federal government will continue having a “respectful and constructive” relationship with the deputies and senators.
Lawmakers are fully committed to addressing natural disasters with a comprehensive and impartial vision through the Prevention and Attention to Natural Disasters Program, he added.
