‘Migrating Workers Should Get Soft Loans’ Gulf Today go to original November 18, 2010
Abu Dhabi - The UAE took part in the fourth Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), which was hosted by Mexico, in Puerto Vallarta, last week.
The UAE team was led by Saeed Rashid Al Za’abi, UAE ambassador to Mexico, and Yusouf Abdul Ghani, executive director of Policies and Strategies, Ministry of Labour.
This year, the title of the meeting was “Integrating Migration Policies into Development Strategies for the Benefit of All.”
The UAE along with Sweden chaired a discussion circle held on the sideline of the conference. A report issued by the panel took note of the initiative mooted by the UAE and some Asian countries in view of Abu Dhabi Dialogue which calls banks in the source countries to extend soft loans to workers to cover expenses of temporary job requirements in the UAE. The UK urged close monitoring of the experiment, saying valuable lessons can be drawn from it.
The report made reference to the symposium the UAE will host next January on attraction, management and protection of workforce in labour-receiving countries. The UAE Ministry of Labour will organise the event in conjunction with the International Organisation for Migration, and office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The findings will be presented to a high-level on international migration on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in spring 2013.
