Border Crossings Between Mexico and the U.S. Boost Trade Suzanne Stephens Waller - Presidencia de la República go to original November 05, 2010
| (Presidencia de la República) | | San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora - President Felipe Calderón declared that in order to boost trade links between Mexico and the United States, the best thing both countries can do is to build border crossing points and improve infrastructure.
“Mexicans believe that beyond our problems and differences and history, the best thing two neighboring countries that are partners and allies can build is bridges and border crossing points.
We know that the only way we can really advance is by increasing trade,” he said
During the Inauguration of the San Luis Colorado II International Crossing and Border Port in Sonora, the President said that, in addition to involving $70 million USD in investment, this new border crossing is a step forward in the modernization of the country.
Accompanied by Mexican ambassador to the United States Arturo Sarukhan and state governor Guillermo Padrés, the President explained that this Border Port will be equipped with a series of devices that will make this a safer border, such as X- and Gamma-ray apparatuses to check the contents of vehicles passing through the area.
“We do not want them to keep sending Mexico dirty money or weapons and neither do the Americans want us to send them drugs or other illegal goods. What we want is more borders and crossing points without overlooking the security Mexicans are demanding," he said.
President Calderón said that border bridges and crossing points permit greater rapprochement between economies, since they increase trade and improve infrastructure.
“I would like to end by saying that it is time to review our common strengths and step up efforts to make this zone the most competitive, strongest and most capable of triumphing in an globalized economy not only in our countries but in the whole world," he said.
This project involved construction of a border crossing, including a Vehicular Crossing and will relieve overcrowding in the present border crossing and provide direct access from Arizona to the Puerto Peñasco tourist resort.
It is expected to handle a total of 500 trucks/day with a 3% annual growth rate. It will also speed up traffic flows from Hermosillo, reducing crossing time by up to 30 minutes.
