President Felipe Calderón Meets with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon Suzanne Stephens Waller - Presidencia de la República go to original December 09, 2010
| (Presidencia de la República) | | Cancún, Quintana Roo - During his participation in the Top-Level Segment of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP16) and the 6th Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP6), Mexican President Felipe Calderón met with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
During the meeting, they exchanged points of view on the progress of negotiations at these Conferences. They agreed that the process, conducted by the Mexican Presidency, has achieved significant progress and that obtaining an integral, balanced package of decisions is feasible.
They also said that Cancún provided an opportunity to strengthen the multilateral system and confirm that it is the most suitable instrument for finding solutions to global problems such as climate change.
The UN Secretary General hailed the level of transparency and inclusion with whcih Mexico has served as President of COP16, which has been acknowledged by the participants. This has helped re-establish confidence in the process and fostered a positive environment for negotiations.
In short, he praised Mexico's effort, not only as an organizer of the event, but as a key element in conducting negotiations.
President Calderón was accompanied by Secretaries of Foreign Affairs, the Environment, Natural Resources and Economy: Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada and Bruno Ferrari García de Alba, respectively.
