Playa del Carmen, Mexico - A hotel in a Mexican resort city where five Canadian tourists were killed in a gas explosion has been fined, officials confirmed.
The $481,000 penalty was charged to the Spanish-owned Grand Riviera Princess Hotel by the city of Playa del Carmen for failure to report modifications to its propane installation, Canada's Postmedia News reported Sunday.
The violations were not considered to be part of the official investigation into last month's blast, which also took the lives of two hotel employees, Postmedia said.
"After the inspection done by the local government, it was found that certain modifications to various gas installations were not reported," city spokesman Pedro Juarez said. "The fine is for not reporting the modifications that were done."
Postmedia said the investigation into the explosion was pointing toward a possible accumulation of gas.
