| Jose Antonio Arcos | | Mexico has arrested the head of La Familia drug cartel, one of the most-wanted drug lords in the country, who is also sought in the United States.
Jose Antonio Arcos is "one of most-wanted suspected criminals, for whose capture a $US240,000 ($244,375) reward was offered", the Public Security Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
Mr Arcos was arrested in Morelia, capital of the western Michoacan state where La Familia operates, it added.
Mexican authorities have been battling a spiralling wave of drug-related crime and murder that has killed more than 28,000 people since 2006, despite the deployment of some 50,000 troops across the country.
Mr Arcos, the security ministry said, was allegedly one of 20 top drug cartel bosses being sought in Mexico, with a total price on their heads of $US2.4 million ($2.44 million).
The La Familia crime lord "is also under investigation for alleged drug trafficking in the United States," it added.
