Kidnap Law Now in Effect Carmen Martínez Jiménez - The News go to original December 01, 2010
Mexico City – President Felipe Calderón said on Monday that the Law to Prevent and Sanction Crimes, which implements harsher punishments for criminals, will help the government to take more effective actions against kidnappings.
“The bestiality and the cowardliness that criminals act with will not be tolerated. It is urgent to put a stop to those who have made kidnapping a modus vivendi,” Calderón said.
Speaking alongside the Secretaries of Interior and Public Security and the Attorney General, Calderón said that the law establishes sentences from 25 to 45 years in jail for kidnappers who use violence against their victims. The punishment will be more severe if kidnappers are or used to be public security institutions personnel. If the victim is killed, kidnappers will be sentenced from 40 to 70 years in jail, without the right of reducing the sentence. The law also includes a support fund for the victims and their families.
“Lack of action, irresponsibility, and passivity have turned crime into the biggest challenge that Mexicans face. The country has gradually been left without trustworthy and efficient security and judicial institutions,” he said.
