Senators Propose Liberal Gun Law Víctor Mayén - The News go to original December 07, 2010
| (The News) | | Mexico City - Senators from different political parties on Monday announced the proposal of a bill that would modify the Federal Law on Firearms and Explosives in order to authorize civilians to bear high-caliber weapons.
These include AK-47 machine guns and R-15 assault rifles, so they can defend themselves from violence, caused by the attacks of drug traffickers and common delinquents.
The propounder of the reform is Convergence Party senator, Eugenio Govea Arcos.
The bill is seeking to soften the law regarding the bearing and transportation of high-caliber arms by civilians, as they are only authorized to bear .380 caliber pistols.
Govea noted that the proposal responds to an increasing need for protection, as the citizenry is being “kidnapped” by organized crime, as well as by the inefficiency of laws and government officials in providing peace to Mexicans.
“On one hand, we are kidnapped by an obsolete law that punishes with jail all those who bear firearms. On the other hand, we are kidnapped by a bunch of criminals that steal, murder, kidnap and extort with impunity. We believe it is important to discuss this matter, as Mexicans are defenseless,” Govea added.
Goeva said that he would reveal the names of the lawmakers that support the bill after it is presented in Congress.
According to Article 15 of the Federal Law on Firearms and Explosives, “in the home, it is permissible to possess firearms for the inhabitants’ legitimate defense and safety. Firearms must be registered with the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena).”
