U.S. Election 2012: Stewart Alexander Says Ethanol Mistake “No Mistake”

While campaigning for U.S. Vice President in 2007 and 2008, Stewart Alexander sharply criticized the 2007 Federal Energy Bill (Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007) that provided huge government subsidies to produce corn ethanol. Now, three years later, former Vice President Al Gore says government subsidized corn ethanol is a mistake.

Stewart Alexander had charged that the energy bill had provisions that would drastically increase the profits for the petroleum and ethanol producers while increasing the cost for food, fuel, consumer goods and transportation. Alexander says “This energy policy jeopardize the entire food supply for the nation while greatly increasing the wealth of the super rich.”

In a recent article written by Dr. Venkat Lakshmi, he notes “Any production system for ethanol or biodiesel using agricultural products that can be used as food for man and animals, corn, sugarcane or sweet potatoes is a very bad idea. We should embrace conservation as the lack of food will increase poverty in the world, cause economic hardship, increases the disparity between the have and the have-nots.”

According to Dr. Lakshmi, “Proponents of ethanol argue that this (ethanol) is an intermediate step on the way to development of alternative sources of energy and that by promoting ethanol, a whole host of other ideas will be worked on. This is simply not true as producers of agricultural products that can be used as raw material for ethanol production will not see it this way. They view this as a business proposition here to stay. Many farmers are replacing their cotton and soybean crop with corn as prices have increased to $4 per bushel and there is a good profit associated with the cultivation of corn as opposed to these other crops. As a result, food prices associated with other crops have risen due to lower production.”

Stewart Alexander says another “inconvenient truth” is that “Washington Democrats and Republicans know how to buy votes; take care of the corporations that produce ethanol, and in return it will generate campaign funding that will generate votes. The 2007 Energy Bill was only about buying political support.”

Stewart Alexander has announced that he will seek the 2012 presidential nomination of the Socialist Party USA and the Green Party of the United States. Alexander says, as U.S. President he will seek to repeal the 2007 Federal Energy Bill.
