Everyone was a winner at the last Becas Breakfast, which was held on January 19, 2011. Over 160 people filled Daiquiri Dick's for this monthly event, which is held at different restaurants.
Becas Vallarta provides scholarships and school supplies for area students who qualify. "It helps the smart kids that can't afford to go to school," says Dolf Jakobs, a supporter, "If you don't have education, you don't have nothing so the kids have to go to school and get better."
"I have been a member of Becas since 1997 so every year that I come down I volunteer and it's been wonderful so that's why i don't miss a breakfast," says Lanaya Dix, a long-time volunteer. "It is for these children and the whole future of the country... I mean the education is where it's at, so it's a good program."
There was a flurry of activity at the January 19 breakfast with seven attendance gifts, 25 raffle prizes and eight silent auction items. The staff served up a variety of breakfast favorites including Chilaquiles and French Toast.
Over $33,000 pesos were raised, which will help this year's Becas scholarship students continue their educations.
