Puerto Vallarta Events - Month of May in Review

Celebrity Sighting: The extremely popular Kardashin Kourtney enjoying her stay in Punta de Mita.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - May is the first month of the slower summer season here in Vallarta and you would expect it to be very quiet. Not this year. From celebrity sightings and a host of May holidays, the Fiestas del Mayo and Restaurant Week to work beginning on the Malecón renovation project, the month was anything but slow!

The sisters Kim and Kourtney Kardashin along with Kourtney's husband Scott Disick and son Mason were in the Banderas Bay area, Kim also brought her new BF - the New Jersey Nets basketball star, Nick Humphries.

They stayed with friend Joe Frances of the well known Girls Gone Wild in his luxurious beachfront private villa. There were several photos of the bikini clad Kardashin sisters strolling the beaches of the Punta Mita Four Seasons resort area with their sweeties. Perhaps it was in this very romantic setting that Nick popped the question to Kim as the two are now engaged to be married.

As well, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders were in the Puerto Vallarta area for the 5th year in a row they chose the Puerto Vallarta / Punta Mita area to visit and take advantage of the beautiful scenery as setting to shoot their 2012 Calendar. The Cheerleaders stayed at Punta Mita and as you can imagine these bikini clad beauties also attracted a lot of attention.

However, the biggest news for the month of May was the start of the Malecón Renovation Project, an ambitious project to upgrade the existing pedestrian zone, rebuild the damaged retaining seas wall and much more. Phase one is planned to be completed in 2 months and then there will be a partial reopening of the Malecón - hopefully for pedestrians as the people of Vallarta miss the Malecón very much.

In one of the weekly meetings to update the public on the status of the Malecón project, the Mayor of Puerto Vallarta, Salvador Gonzalez Resendiz, announced that the work is moving faster than expected.

May is also the month for Restaurant Week, the misnamed celebration which lasts 17 days and highlights the amazing selection of fabulous restaurants in Puerto Vallarta. The "Week" is a showcase for the chefs to offer a special 3 course menu, with 3 choices for each course at up to half the usual price. What better time to check out restaurants you have not tried or visit the old favorites? This annual event is a very popular draw for foodie travelers.

There are also several important holidays in May, the 1st is known as Labor Day, a global holiday that focuses on workers. Here in Vallarta, Banderas Bay Workers Marched in a Labor Day Parade in the morning through the center of town with marching bands to accompany the workers.

The next holiday was May 3rd, Día de la Santa Cruz, which is the day of the Patron Saint of construction workers and a big celebration for the Church de la Santa Cruz - Puerto Vallarta's first Catholic Church with much fireworks and a small circus on the street in front of the church.

Ironically, May 5th, or Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates the battle of Puebla, is one of the biggest Mexican Holidays in the US is not even a blip on the radar in Mexico.

May 10th is Mothers Day in Mexico and this is a very important holiday in a country that reveres motherhood and is mostly Catholic. The holiday is always celebrated on May 10th and schools are closed and many businesses give any mothers the day off.

Beginning in the early hours of the morning you will hear the strains of the traditional song "Las Mañanitas" as families serenade their mothers. All day the streets are full of people carrying flowers and gifts to their mothers and you know it is a very special day.
