Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - To mark the tenth anniversary of Radio Universidad de Guadalajara in Puerto Vallarta, the first International Meeting of Journalists will be held in conjunction with the Centro Universitario de la Costa (CUCosta) of the University of Guadalajara (UDG) September 8-9, 2011.
In order to generate knowledge, become responsible citizens and foster critical thinking, Radio Universidad de Guadalajara in Puerto Vallarta organized this meeting of media professionals, which will include some of the most prominent in the field of journalism nationally and internationally.
The meeting's objective is to educate the university community and society in general as to the points of view of various journalistic specialists by following their work which touches on the pulse of Mexico on various issues.
This conference will be a completely free and open to the general public at the Juan Luis Cifuentes Lemus auditorium of CUCosta in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco.
OBJECTIVES
• Promoting critical thinking in the university community and society at large regarding the reality of current national issues.
• Promote the exchange of ideas and experiences among journalists and their peers at the local and regional level within Mexico and the United States.
• Encourage reflection on the dissemination of information and the role of media in the current context of Mexico.
ISSUES FOR DISCUSSION
Table discussions on the issues of drug trafficking, politics, human rights, gender, migration and sports
• Drugs and Society: Implications of drug-trafficking in Mexico, the United States and South America, the government's strategy in the drug war and its impact on Mexico's social fabric
• Journalism and Gender: Challenges for women in journalism and the role of women in the media
• Migration as a global phenomenon, migration policies and US-Mexico binational, migration and human rights issues with regard to the Arizona Law
• Journalism in Mexico Today: An overview of the problems facing our country: corruption, insecurity and unemployment, the role of citizens in Mexico today, as well as the role of the media in information management
• Sports Journalism: Sports journalism, sport in Mexico as seen from abroad, international sports policies, "mafia" in sport and the role of the media
Similarly, we will discuss issues inherent in the professional role of journalists, such as the right of journalists in the daily exercise of their work, citizens' information preferences and the responsibility of the media in the current context of Mexico.
