Three more blocks of Puerto Vallarta's newly renovated Malecón were opened under the supervision of Mayor Salvador González Reséndiz on Monday, August 8, 2011.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - On August 8th, three more blocks of the Puerto Vallarta Malecón were opened under the supervision of Mayor Salvador González Reséndiz, who toured the area to ensure that everything was in order and on schedule.

"We are complying with the Malecón restoration schedule as anticipated, and on Monday morning we opened three streets where both Vallartenses and visitors can see the significant progress of this project," said the Mayor.

This area of the Malecón was the most complicated part of the project because ramps were laid down to the beach, the sidewalk has a pattern that gives it a wave effect, and this part of the containment wall is vertical, which made construction more complicated.

Those responsible for the project told the Mayor that now that the structural part of the work in this area has been completed, the space can now be opened up for workers to begin landscaping, light fixture placements and the sidewalk finishing, which is being laid by hand in the traditional and artisanal manner.

Since the walkway is being laid with small stones that form a series of figures that will run the length of the Malecón and together tell a story; this work is being done in Huichol art, which will be duly explained in what will be the Museum which is now the Municipal Presidency.

Now that this much of the project is open, you can see that the ground gained from the beach and side streets has increased the width of the pedestrian area by approximately 6 to 8 meters.

In the amphitheater area, work is moving along at a fast pace on the jetty, a protective stone structure that extends from the shore into the water to prevent the beach from washing away, which is also increasing the pedestrian area behind the arches by about 50%.

The Mayor also mentioned that the number of palm trees in the downtown area will be increased from the 28 trees that previously ran the length of the Malecón to more than 200 palms, which will add life and shade to this attractive tourist spot in the city. The remainder of this Puerto Vallarta icon is scheduled to be completed and unveiled by October.
