Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - According to a recent article in USA TODAY, Holland America will be dropping Mazatlan and Acapulco from more cruises, citing safety concerns.
The Seattle-based line began canceling port calls in Mazatlan and Acapulco earlier this year due to safety concerns and already has said it would not be going back to the destinations in 2011. "The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority," the line says in a statement sent to USA TODAY.
Holland America says seven-night Mexican Riviera cruises on the 1,916-passenger Oosterdam departing Jan. 28, Feb. 18 and March 10 will now feature an extra day in Puerto Vallarta instead of a visit to Mazatlan, with an overnight included.
Mazatlan and Acapulco remain on the schedule at Holland America for cruises in late 2012 and 2013. "Discussions will continue with local authorities in both ports to determine the appropriate time to resume port calls," the line says.
According to CruiseShipNews.co.uk, Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Star itinerary for December 2013 includes nine seven-day Mexican Riviera sailings.
"Following a two-year hiatus, we are also pleased to bring Norwegian Star back to the West Coast to sail to the Mexican Riviera and through the Panama Canal," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian’s chief executive officer.
These cruises go on sale to the general public on December 15, 2011. Ports of call will include Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
