Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Despite bad press and travel warnings, not everyone is avoiding Mexico this month. Hundreds of U.S. and Canadian students have been enjoying Spring break at several Puerto Vallarta hotels since early this week.
Last month, the U.S. State Department issued a travel warning to Americans to avoid all but essential travel to all or parts of 14 of 31 Mexican states. On Tuesday, the Texas Department of Public Safety issued their own warning, advising students that tend to travel to Mexico during spring break to stay home.
While there are security concerns in certain areas in the country, particularly in the north, travel to traditional tourist destinations remains safe.
"Warnings issued by the U.S. government and Texas State Police warning against coming to Mexican tourist destinations did not cause a negative impact among students," said the Regional Director of Tourism, Ludwig Estrada Virgen.
The state official went on to say that since Puerto Vallarta is still a safe tourist destination in Mexico. In fact, leading United States and Canadian travel providers are encouraging students to visit Puerto Vallarta for this year's Spring break, which will last an average of six weeks.
He explained that there are two companies that bring in spring breakers, which this year will stay in hotels such as Canto del Sol, Las Palmas, Valmar, Krystal and Pelícanos among others, in addition to the smaller groups of students with greater economic resources that are staying at the Marriott Hotel in the exclusive Marina Vallarta resort area.
"The recent alerts did not discourage the arrival of spring breakers to Puerto Vallarta, which will receive more than five thousand students this season," he added.
