Mexico City, Mexico - The Mexican Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) is set to order the impression of over 200 million ballots for July's Mexican national election.
The ballots will be printed in the National Printing Shop and will be kept under strictly guarded until the election takes place on July 1st. The 200 million ballots will include the congressional and senatorial choices as well as the presidential choices.
According to the institute, there are 84.6 million Mexicans who are registered to vote, although, for a number of reasons, only 79.2 are eligible to vote in the 2012 election. This is still a record for the number of Mexicans carrying valid voters’ cards (credencial del elector) as this number tops the number of valid voter cards for the 2006 federal elections by 8 million, and the 2000 election by almost 20 million.
In a press release on Monday, the IFE said that preparations for the elections are on schedule and are going smoothly. “All of the pieces are being put into place, with monitoring by the public and the political parties, so that Mexicans can cast their votes in a free and informed manner,” the press release stated.
In addition, the IFE will install 144,500 polling places distributed throughout the country. The Mexican election is citizen-run and the staffers will be people whose family name begins with "S," as per the drawing carried out a few weeks ago. The agency is currently training these citizens to run the voting booths on Election Day.
