Mexico - German magazine Der Spiegel reported that German automaker Audi won the backing of its parent company, Volkswagen, to build a new plant in México. Der Spiegel did not cite sources for the report.
According to the European magazine, the new factory will be designated to assemble Audi's Q5, their new sport utility vehicle, beginning in 2015. VW's supervisory board will commission the plans at its next scheduled meeting on April 18th.
VW originally wanted to expand its factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which was only opened a year ago, to make room for production of Audi vehicles.
The final decision to build an Audi plant in México has not been made yet according to a joint statement by union representatives from VW and Audi on Friday.
