Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - On a recent visit to the twin tunnel and bypass road construction site, Mayor Salvador Gonzalez Resendiz met with the presidents of the Ingeniero Civiles (Civil Engineering) Colleges of La Costa and Puerto Vallarta, Óscar Humberto and Fernando Arias Hernandez, respectively, who confirmed that the project, which is so important to the city's infrastructure, will be completed before the end of this year.
Along with the mayor, both engineers substantiated the progress being made on the 490 meter-long tunnel, which includes a drainage system designed to prevent the infiltration of water from the natural aquifers in the area.
The engineers also informed the Mayor that they had thoroughly checked the old tunnel and found it in good condition, but suggested that improvements be made to the tunnel's lighting and ventilation systems to make it safer and more driver-friendly. At the same time, those in charge of the project explained that since the new drainage system was implemented in the first tunnel, no water has seeped inside, as it had in previous rainy seasons.
This important infrastructure project was made possible thanks to the efforts made by Mayor Resendiz, who after several years of waiting, has made great strides towards his goal of improving the city's traffic flow during his term of office.
The new tunnel is scheduled for completion no later than December, but Ramón Guerrero Martínez will become the new Mayor of Puerto Vallarta on October 1st, 2012, so he will most likely see the completion of the project, which will offer two lanes of travel from north to south and two more for those traveling from south to north, thereby easing vehicular traffic in the municipality and especially in the city center.
