Bahia de Banderas, Mexico - The "Operativo Alcoholímetro" (Operation Breathalyzer) program continues to have success helping to rid the Banderas Bay roads and highways of drivers under the influence of alcohol.
Rafael Cervantes Padilla, mayor of the municipality of Bahia de Banderas, indicated that the breathalyzer check-points will continue in order to educate motorists about the problems associated drinking and driving.
This past weekend was a perfect example of how well the program is working.
The check-points were set up around 11:30 Friday night and continued until 4:30 Saturday morning. During that time, 28 drivers were found to have blood-alcohol levels above the legal limit. The drivers were all ticketed and had their vehicles impounded, while 2 of the them had to be arrested after they became aggressive with the authorities.
The check-point inspections were headed by José Ramón Álvarez Arreola, Municipal Transit Dispatch Officer, along with the Operational Director, Manuel de Jesús Quezada, in coordination with the municipal police and medical personnel of DIF - an institution of social assistance for Mexican Families.
The purpose of the program is to improve the safety of everyone on the roads and reduce the number of car accidents, many of which are alcohol related.
