Mexico City, Mexico – Time magazine has included Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on its list of the "100 most influential people of 2013."
Peña Nieto joined 22 other influential leaders on the list including recently-elected Pope Francis, US President Barack Obama, North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, and South Korean President Park Guen-hye.
Former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson wrote Time’s summary of Peña Nieto, praising him for signing the "Pact for Mexico” with the two opposition parties, enacting "significant" labor and education reforms, proposing momentous changes in the energy and telecommunications sectors, and fiscal reform.
The former governor went on to say that the new Mexican President has "boatloads of charisma, a quick grasp of the issues, and a self-deprecating humorous side. "Peña Nieto combines Reagan’s charisma with Obama’s intellect and Clinton’s political skills. This is a leader to watch."
Time divides the 100 personalities into five categories: Titans - including Jay-Z and Lebron James; Pioneers - such as immunologist Katherine Luzuriaga, part of the team that cured a newborn afflicted with AIDS; Leaders - including European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi; Icons - a category encompassing pop diva Beyonce and young Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai; and Artists - including singer Christina Aguilera and filmmaker Steven Spielberg. The list is not in any particular order.
