Wheelchair Loans Make Vallarta Accessible to Everyone

go to original
August 13, 2013

The wheelchairs, walkers, canes and crutches are available for a loan of up to four hours after completing a questionnaire, signing a promissory note, and presenting a photo ID.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - To ensure that Puerto Vallarta's attractions are accessible to everyone, municipal authorities, through the Municipal Council for Disability (Comudis) and the System for Integral Family Development (DIF) have installed a booth on the boardwalk that provides individuals in need with the free use of wheelchairs and walkers.

The orthopedic apparatus, including wheelchairs, walkers, canes and crutches, are available for a loan of up to four hours after completing a questionnaire, signing a promissory note, and presenting a photo ID. The module was installed the first week of August and will remain in place until the last Sunday of the summer vacation period.

In this regard, the head of Comudis, Alonso Bravo Amaral, said that this program comes just in time for the summer holiday period, when more tourists are visiting the port, and are often accompanied by people with disabilities. The aim of the module, he said, is to "ensure that all visitors - whether they have no problems walking, have a permanent or temporary disability, or can not walk long distances due to age - can journey along the boardwalk."

Bravo Amaral stressed that showing courtesy to the impaired visitors who are enjoying the Malecón is of utmost importance, because it makes vacationers realize that Puerto Vallarta is not only accessible to everyone, but is also a warm and friendly city that welcomes all visitors with open arms.

Municipal authorities hope that the wheelchair and walker loan program will not only enable visitors with disabilities to enjoy all of the wondrous sights along the Malecón, but also encourage everyone to help people with disabilities earn an income by buying handicrafts that are made in the Comudis workshops, which are for sale at the booth.

On that subject, Bravo Amaral invited everyone to join in the Cena a Ciegas, a special event to be held at La Posta Restaurant in El Centro on Thursday, August 15th at 7:30 pm. The goal of this innovative Italian dinner is to raise public awareness, while raising funds to help Comudis continue their programs for people with disabilities. Tickets cost $300 pesos per person (drinks and tips not included) and are available at the DIF offices or by calling (322) 221-3200.

He also invited those with disabilities to participate in the Comudis workshops that are held on the institution premises, and then sell the handicrafts they make at the Saturday flea market in Barrio Santa Maria.
