The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) said that data shows that 14 percent of Mexican drivers flee the scene of an accident - up from 6 percent in 2001. The INEGI said this is increasing throughout the country.
However, in Chihuahua seven out of every ten drivers responsible for an accident flee the scene of the accident. In the state of Tabasco 25 percent flee, and in Sinaloa 20 percent attempt to evade responsibility by fleeing the scene of an accident. The INEGI says that fleeing the scene of an accident increases on the weekends, especially on Sundays.
According to the INEGI, the more serious the accident the greater the likelihood the responsible driver will leave the scene. If someone is injured the rate of fleeing is between 14 and 15 percent. If someone is killed, that percentage jumps to 27 percent.
The INEGI reported that in 2012 responsible drivers fled the scene of the accident in which 1,425 people were killed and in which 19,325 were injured. Thirty-nine percent of those that were killed were pedestrians, followed by the other driver (27 percent,) passengers (25 percent) and cyclists (9 percent.)
According to the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions, México has 35 million vehicles on its roads, 70 percent of which do not have insurance on them.
