Mexicali, Mexico - On June 25th the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) will decide whether same-sex couples may marry in Baja California. In 2010 the state passed legislation banning marriage by gay couples.
In 2013 Victor Espinoza and Fernando Urias of Mexicali, obtained an injunction after the local government refused to marry them. However, the City Council, the state legislature, and the state government appealed the decision of the Circuit Court in Guadalajara.
If the SCJ rules in favor of the couple, Baja California will join states such as Colima, Chihuahua, Oaxaca, and Nuevo Leon, which through injunctions have determined same-sex marriages are to be granted.
