Coahuila, Mexico - A male couple who tied the knot last weekend was the first to take advantage of the recently approved same-sex marriage law in the northwestern Mexican state of Coahuila.
Jesus Fernando Covarrubias Monsivais and Luis Alberto Reyes Soto married in front of friends, family, and the media at a Civil Registry office in Saltillo, the state's capital and largest city.
The two men met at a party 12 years ago and started dating three years later. After the ceremony the couple announced that they will start the proceedings to adopt a child.
Coahuila Governor Ruben Moreira Valdez congratulated the couple on their nuptials.
On September 1, 2014, Coahuila became the second Mexican state to approve same-sex marriage, and to recognize the legal rights of homosexual couples to benefits such as healthcare and the right to adopt children.
Gay couples can also marry in the federal district of Mexico City, where lawmakers approved a marriage law in 2009. Such unions have also taken place in Quintana Roo, where the state's civil code is gender neutral.
At least three more homosexual couples have already begun proceedings to get married in Coahuila.
