Mexico City, Mexico – As part of its formal delivery, Mexico’s new Boeing-787 Dreamliner presidential airplane was staged on the runway of the Santa Lucia military airbase near Mexico City for several hours on Friday, according to the Mexican press.
The airplane, ordered in the final year of Felipe Calderon's 2006-2012 term in office, will cost more than $505 million and will have the capacity to carry more than 200 passengers.
After Mexico accepted formal delivery of the aircraft, it immediately took off for the United States where it will be equipped and prepared for the use of President Enrique Pena Nieto starting in September of 2015.
The current presidential plane is a Boeing 757 which was acquired in 1987. It has a private cabin with 26 executive-class seats and a capacity for 66 passengers. This aircraft is considered the best in Latin America and is christened with the name of Benito Juarez, the first indigenous citizen to become president of Mexico. Juarez lead the country for five terms and is regarded as one of the country's greatest and most beloved leaders.
