The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are to visit the world’s first Cornish pasty museum in Mexico during a tour of the Latin American country and Colombia.
Prince Charles and Camilla will travel to the town of Real del Monte in the Mexican state of Hidalgo on November 2nd to see how Cornish men and women brought the humble pasty to Mexico after emigrating there to work in silver mines in 1825.
Those Cornish pioneers also introduced football to Mexico after arriving from Falmouth to help resuscitate the Mexican silver mining industry. Real del Monte still has a thriving relationship with Redruth in Cornwall with which it is twinned.
In spite of early difficulties - Mexican customs officials confiscated swedes (Swedish rutabagas) brought in by Pam Melville from the Poldark mine despite her protests that they were an essential part of the concoction - they turned Cornish pasties into a much prized delicacy in that part of Mexico.
However, the local version, known as paste, now includes more exotic ingredients such as peppers, chicken, pineapple, and hot chilli sauce and is typically washed down with a terrifying brew called pulque, an alcoholic beverage made from the fermented agave sap.
The heir to the throne of Great Britain and his wife will pay their respects at the Cornish cemetery in Real del Monte, which contains the only known British World War I memorial in Mexico. John Vial, a Cornish immigrant who died aged 22 at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, is buried there and Charles, who is also the Duke of Cornwall will lay a wreath at the memorial to commemorate El Dia de los Muertos.
Prince Charles, 65, and the Duchess, 67, will visit the two Latin American countries from October 28 to November 6, beginning their tour in the Colombian capital Bogota.
The Prince has visited Mexico four times - in 1966, 1970, 1993, and 2002. Camilla has visited Mexico privately but this will be her first visit to Colombia.
Clarence House said their visit was at the request of the British Government, following invitations from President Juan Manuel Santos Calderon of Colombia and President Enrique Pena Nieto of Mexico.
"The visit will be a major boost to the bilateral relationship between the UK and these two dynamic and influential nations in Latin America," a spokesperson said.
They will undertake a broad range of engagements to promote the United Kingdom’s partnership with both Colombia and Mexico in areas such as combating climate change, improving trade and investment, creating youth opportunities, encouraging corporate social responsibility, preserving historical and cultural links, and supporting victims of sexual and domestic violence.
In Colombia, Charles will attend a peace and reconciliation ceremony to remember the victims of Colombia’s armed conflicts. He will also visit the Macarena National Park in southern Colombia.
The couple will end their five-day visit to the country in Cartagena, where the Prince is to deliver the concluding speech at the "Health of the Oceans" international conference and will also attend a sunset ceremony on board the HMS Argyll, which will be moored there. Charles, having been a naval officer on his last visit to Colombia in 1974, will take part in this ceremony in his role as the Admiral of the Fleet.
After waving goodbye to Colombia, the couple will begin their Mexico visit during the county's celebration of the Day of the Dead. Besides Real del Monte they will visit Mexico City, where they will receive an official welcome from President Enrique Peña Nieto and his wife Angélica Rivera at the presidential palace; Campeche, to visit the Edzna Maya archaeological site which dates back to 400 BC; and finally Monterrey, the business and industrial center of northern Mexico.
