Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Last year local businessman Elias Sacal obtained federal grant money to finance the renovation of Marina Vallarta. After the government funding was appropriated, Sacal went to the neighborhood and business associations with his plan to restore interest in the area as a popular tourist destination.
To effectuate the project, Sacal allied with Opequimar Centro Marino, the company whose shipyard is located just outside the marina and provides services to the facility and the vessels harbored there.
With an investment that could reach up to $100 billion pesos, the revitalization project will include renovation of the docks, piers, and tourist walkways, as well as the sidewalk cafes, restaurants, and boutiques - all designed to appeal to both foreign and domestic visitors.
Opequimar CEO Verján Carlos Alberto Flores, explained that project is expected to be completed by the start of the of 2015-2016 winter season.
"We will renovate the docks and tourist areas, and install security cameras to rejuvenate tourist interest in this area," said Flores. "With the completion of the new Malecon and Los Muertos Pier, it is time to have a new look for the marina, as it is more than 30 years old."
The Marina Vallarta Neighborhood Association hopes that the project will encourage entrepreneurs to open new businesses in the area.
