Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Despite its morbid name, Playa de Los Muertos, located in the city's Romantic Zone just south of downtown Puerto Vallarta, is considered the safest beach in this tourist destination.
In addition to lifeguards, the municipal police continuously patrol this stretch of sand, keeping their eyes peeled for signs of trouble on the beach and on the city's iconic Los Muertos Pier.
In a recent interview with NNC, members of the Municipal Coordination of Civil Protection and Fire said that due to this constant vigilance, there have been no fatalities on Playa Los Muertos for more than two years.
They said that Los Muertos remains the city's safest beach, despite the fact that it is the most visited by not only locals, but also national and international tourists - especially during holiday periods such as Spring Break, Semana Santa and Summer Vacation.
The lifeguards explained that during holiday periods, they also have the support of the fire department emergency vessel, which conducts surveillance tours along the municipality's main beaches to intervene in any emergency situation.
While the coordinated efforts of the city's first-responders, tourist police and other law enforcement officers are certainly commendable, citizens are urged to take the necessary safety measures.
The Puerto Vallarta Municipal Civil Protection and Fire Department recommends that locals and visitors alike take preemptive measures to prevent accidents while enjoying their day(s) on the beach. Among the recommendations are to use sunscreen to avoid sunburn, to keep a close eye on children swimming or playing near the water, to stay well hydrated, and to avoid driving if you have consumed alcoholic beverages.
