Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay it can be difficult to keep up with it all. Here's a look at some of this week's news, a few community announcements, and some of this weekend's events that you won't want to miss.
Friday Musical Film Series at Los Mangos
El Muégano, the film club at Los Mangos Public Library, is devoting their Friday evening screenings to a series of musical films starting this Friday and continuing through May, June and July. The programming is being done by Lucia Aubain from the film club, along with Vallarta Lifestyles' managing editor, Paco Ojeda, who is offering a discussion of select films as part of his "Introduction to Musicals" lecture series, in Spanish. The lectures discussing the films are offered on Thursdays, while the screenings take place the following day. "We are very excited to provide the local community with tools and resources to better appreciate the art form, so we've chosen musicals that are presented with Spanish subtitles," he explained. "And while the lectures will only appeal to those fluent in Spanish, the actual films can be enjoyed in their original language by any musical fan." All films begin at 7 pm. Visit

Mexico has published rules governing the use of drones, allowing people to operate the smallest drones in daylight without a permit but with safety rules. Mexico's Transportation Department has established three classes of drones according to size. The smallest weigh 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) or less. They won't require a permit, but like all other drones must stay 9.2 kilometers (5.72 miles) away from airports and 900 meters (985 yards) from helicopter pads. Medium-size drones are defined as weighing between 2 kilograms and 25 kilograms (55 pounds), and require a permit unless they're operated on the grounds of a flight club. Under rules published Wednesday, large drones over 25 kilograms will require an operating permit and the operator must also have a pilot's license.
The Dog House Closes Both Vallarta Locations
We regret to inform you that one of South Side Vallarta's favorite late night eateries has closed it's doors forever. The Dog House, which opened it's first location in the Romantic Zone in 2011, quickly became a favorite with locals and visitors. In the first year alone, the glowing testimonials sky rocketed on TripAdvisor, which recognized The Dog House as one of "The Top Three" eateries around the Bay. The Dog House became so popular that in November of 2014, in a joint venture with Encuentros Pizza, they opened a second location inside Act II Stages, but alas and alack, it too is gone. On April 30, 2015, proprietors Tim Longpré and Agustin Rocha sent out the following announcement:
To our beloved community and patrons, we regretfully announce that as of today, we are closing The Dog House at both of our current locations. We did not come to this decision lightly. We have enjoyed every moment with our faithful long time guests, and staff who have become like family to us. We want to thank everyone who helped launch us to #1 on TripAdvisor and for the hundreds of positive comments that we have received over the past four years. Encuentros will continue to serve their wonderful menu at Act II Entertainment. Though we are sad to see PV's best hot dogs and sausages go, we wish Tim and Agustin all the best in their future endeavors.
No Labor Day Parade in Puerto Vallarta This Year
Though today is
El Día del Trabajo (Labor Day) in Mexico - an occasion usually marked by Labor Day parades with
trabajadores holding banners to promote workers' rights - there will be no May 1st parade in Puerto Vallarta this year. According to the Secretary General of the Federation of Jalisco, Rafael Yerena Zambrano, the reason there will be no parade of workers is that, with the elections coming up in June, this is a time when political passions are running high. Despite the political timing, Labor Day parade had been held in Puerto Vallarta for more than three consecutive decades - up until last year when it was suspended by the current mayor, Ramon Guerrero Martinez. In fact, the union leader recalled that at times in the past, the parade of workers included the handing out of t-shirts, stickers and propaganda by some political parties. He went on to say that this year's parade could be "contaminated" by the political candidates' campaigns, so it is better to leave the celebration of workers for another time when there are more appropriate conditions.
