PV Tourism Officials Meet with Cruise Line Executives

May 14, 2015

Cruise officials attending the Miami meeting included representatives from Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity, and Disney Cruise Line, as well as Florida Caribbean Cruise Association President Michele Paige.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - The Tourism Director of the City of Puerto Vallarta, along with the Jalisco Minister of Tourism, the Director of the Mexican Tourism Board for North America, and the directors of security for Jalisco and Puerto Vallarta, traveled to Miami on May 12 to meet with the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association and discuss skipped port calls in Puerto Vallarta earlier this month.

Representatives from leading cruise lines Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival and Disney also attended the meeting, in which all parties agreed to improve and increase communications to ensure the cruise lines are kept better informed and receive updates in real time about the destination.

The meeting was called after the Disney Wonder, Celebrity Infinity and Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas that were scheduled to stop in Puerto Vallarta instead spent the day at sea, due to conflicting and inaccurate reports about events that occurred on May 1st in the State of Jalisco.

A fourth ship, the Carnival Miracle, maintained its scheduled call, and Norwegian Cruises made an unscheduled call on Puerto Vallarta on Tuesday, May 5th.

"The city of Puerto Vallarta and other areas in the State of Jalisco experienced disturbances on Friday morning May 1. The city and state police quickly responded and put an end to the situation within a matter of hours. Peace was restored and no further events have occurred." Agustin Alvarez, director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board, said in a statement.

Puerto Vallarta continues to offer the tranquility, warm hospitality and security it is well known for, and the isolated and highly unusual incidents that took place have in no way affected or altered this.

"No harm came to any residents or visitors to Puerto Vallarta and no disturbance, restriction or limits have affected tourists in Puerto Vallarta. All tourism infrastructure and services including the port, marina, airport, convention center, hotels and resorts, tours, and transport remained fully operational," the director of the city's tourism board added.

Carnival is the only cruise line that has weekly calls to Puerto Vallarta regularly scheduled this summer, and they are expected to continue as scheduled.

"Given Mexican law enforcement's comprehensive security plans currently in place in Puerto Vallarta, we will continue with our scheduled calls to the destination. However, in an 'abundance of caution,' since earlier clashes between local groups and law enforcement occurred outside of Puerto Vallarta, we have temporarily suspended a small number of shore excursions that require travel outside the main city," Carnival said in a statement.

During the meeting, the Jalisco and Puerto Vallarta security directors assured cruise officials that enhancements to the security at Puerto Vallarta's marina will be implemented to ensure the cruise lines know the whereabouts of all passengers who go ashore, as is done in many other international cruise destinations.
