Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico - Lagrimita the Clown can run for mayor of Guadalajara, the capital of the western Mexican state of Jalisco, the TEPJF electoral court said.
"We are revoking the resolution of the Jalisco Electoral Institute's General Council under which the independent mayoral candidacy for Guadalajara of the ticket headed by Guillermo Cienfuegos Perez was denied," the TEPJF said in a statement.
State election officials informed Cienfuegos Perez, who performs as Lagrimita, in April that he could not appear on the ballot because he lacked the required number of signatures to have a valid candidacy.
The clown needed to gather 23,887 signatures, representing 2 percent of registered voters, to get his name on the ballot. Lagrimita, however, got just 22,899 signatures and appealed the state election agency's ruling.
The TEPJF ordered the state election agency on Friday to place Cienfuegos's name on the ballot even though the documents had already been distributed to electoral districts ahead of the June 7 elections.
Lagrimita launched his campaign a few days ago at his circus and, even though he was not officially a candidate, started putting up posters at various locations in Guadalajara.
The clown thanked the TEPJF for letting him run for mayor of the western city.
"We are the true citizens and the people trust us. The tricky people left us without much time to campaign, but we are going to show that our campaign is for real and has the support of the people," Lagrimita said in a statement.
Campaigning in Jalisco ends on Wednesday.
