July 24 Puerto Vallarta News Brief and Weekend Events

July 24, 2015

From live music and theater to cultural festivals, sporting events, charitable efforts and special interest group meetings, there's always something fun happening in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around the Republic, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. Here's a look at some of this week's Mexico headlines and Banderas Bay area news, plus some of this weekend's events you won't want to miss.

$457,000 USD Found in Diapers, Trash Bags Heading for Mexico

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials seized more than $457,000 in unreported currency hidden in diapers, paint cans and trash bags from two women trying to cross the border to Mexico. Officers stopped a Nissan Maxima last week at the Calexico port of entry. After using an imaging system, the officers found anomalies in certain products in the car's trunk. A CBP dog led officers to several wrapped bundles in the back of the car. Officers discovered money inside a box of diapers, a box of trash bags and a five gallon bucket of paint. Officials pulled out forty-six packages of cash from the car's trunk. The 45-year-old driver and 21-year-old passenger will be further processed by Homeland Security Investigations. Both women were U.S. citizens from Los Angeles.

Puerto Vallarta Municipal Police Arrest ATM Skimming Suspect

Several sources in the financial industry say they are seeing a spike in fraud on customer cards used at ATMs in Mexico. Earlier this month, a pair of ATM skimming devices were found attached to a cash machine here in Puerto Vallarta. On Saturday, July 18, 2015, Puerto Vallarta municipal police arrested a man who had just replaced the battery in a pair of skimming devices he or an associate had installed at an ATM in a busy part of town. This skimming kit targeted certain models of cash machines made by Korean ATM manufacturer Hyosung, and included a card skimming device as well as a hidden camera to record the victim’s ATM card PIN. Ironically, the scammer's Carte Vitale card, a health insurance card of the national health care system in France, is far more secure than the bank cards he was allegedly stealing with the help of the skimming devices. According to Noticiaspv.com, the suspect was apprehended by police as he fled the scene in a vehicle with license plates from Quintana Roo, a state nearly 2,500 km away that is the home of another very popular tourist destination: Cancún. Experts Say Peso Could Fall to 16.80 by Year's End

According to CNN, volatility in the exchange rate is here to stay, at least this year, so you should be cautious when making an investment, buying insurance, traveling abroad, buying online or importing products. On Monday, the dollar hit a retail level of 16.30 pesos and analysts do not rule out a climb up to 16.60 in the short term or even 16.80 pesos by year's end. The rise of the dollar is explained by market uncertainty, as investors are pulling their money out of Mexico and other emerging countries and are deposited in the United States where it is believed safer, said the director of economic analysis at Banco Base, Gabriela Siller. "This rate is excessively high, it is out of economic theory and based on over-reactions. The exchange rate will continue to rise until the Fed raises its rates," she added.
