Pachuca Graffitti Artists Paint the Town

The Mexican government came up with a novel way to unite the community in the small town of Palmitas in Pachuca: they asked local graffitti artists to paint it. Officials thought that asking a youth group known as 'Germen Crew' – who often use graffitti as a means of expression – to paint the 209 houses might serve as a way both to bring locals together and to combat violence among young people. And they were right. The group painted around 20,000 square meters of wall to form a single rainbow mural that spans the town. According to streetartnews, 452 families, or roughly 1808 people, said they were positively affected by the project, and violence among young people has been almost entirely eradicated.

Mexico Finds Cocaine in Fruit Shipment from Colombia

Customs and law enforcement personnel in Mexico say they found an undetermined amount of cocaine dissolved in fruit pulp imported from Colombia. The drug was detected among 24 metric tons of red berries packed into 120 fifty-five-gallon drums of frozen fruit pulp. The berries were thawed, and tests revealed that 16 of the drums contained cocaine mixed into the fruit. Mexico's customs and tax authority said Monday that it was a "sophisticated" and "unprecedented" smuggling attempt. Authorities said the Mexican company named as the importer of the shipment had listed its headquarters at an abandoned, half-built house.
