Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - On July 9, 2015 T-Mobile announced that, starting July 15th, it is extending its Simple Choice plan to include calling in Canada and Mexico as part of what it's calling "Mobile without Borders."

The introduction of Mobile without Borders will mean that all T-Mobile subscribers on a Simple Choice plan will get free calling to and from Mexico and Canada, as well as all the 4G LTE data they're entitled to at no further cost. In other words, they'll be able to use their phones as if they were at home from anywhere in the continent.

If that sounds a little familiar, that's because AT&T recently announced it plans to create a "North American Service Area" after acquiring Mexico's Iusacell and Nextel mobile systems between November and January.

While explaining the new initiative in a video blog, T-Mobile CEO John Legere took the opportunity to give AT&T a good bashing.

"After spending billions buying up Mexican telecoms, AT&T's CEO is promising 'the first seamless network covering Mexico and the U.S.,' something 'unique' that 'nobody else will be able to do for the consumer.' So much for that. They won't be the first. And they won't offer Canada for free," Legere said. "We've done this the Un-carrier way - reaching across borders, partnering with leading providers offering the best LTE networks, creating a simple solution right now - then not charging a penny more for it."

It is worth noting that the new plans are to be used primarily in the U.S., and are not destined for extended international use. T-Mobile won't have 100% coverage in Canada and Mexico, so subscribers will have to do a bit of research before traveling. But it is still a great move that takes some of the sting out of traveling, and out of calling friends and family elsewhere in North America.
