Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Always looking for new ways to draw tourists into the heart of the city, in 2014, the municipal government, through the National Tourism Infrastructure Program, began constructing a set of stairs on the west side of Abasolo leading to Mirador de la Cruz, a vantage point high above downtown Puerto Vallarta that offers locals and visitors sweeping city and ocean views.
This Summer, the second stage of construction began with the building of an embankment to support the main observation terrace, which will include stairs leading to additional lookout points and an emblematic tower, at a cost of $6.3 million pesos.
In later stages of the project, handrails, bathrooms, and a wide range of services, including a concession area, multiple covered sitting areas, and a cable car for easier access, will be added to the viewpoint.
Municipal Tourism Director, Oscar Perez Flores, explained that it is important for people to know that the structure and image of the cross overlooking Puerto Vallarta will remain unchanged. "We are only improving access to an area from which a spectacular view of the city can be seen. What was previously inaccessible to many, since the route was only known by the people of Vallarta and a few very adventurous tourists, will soon be accessible to everyone who wants to admire the bay and the Mexican town that characterizes it."
He went on to say that with this project, "we are not discovering something new, we're just making this area more accessible so everyone can get up there and enjoy the view."
Though the Mirador de la Cruz's opening date has not yet been announced, the government funded project is expected to be completed within three years.
