Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around the Republic, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. Here's a look at some of this week's Mexico headlines plus Puerto Vallarta news, community announcements and some of this weekend's events that you won't want to miss.
Ancient Carving Stolen from Mexico Retrieved in France
A nearly 3,000-year-old carving stolen more than four decades ago from a remote area of southern Mexico has been recovered in France. The Olmec carving dating to around 900 B.C. had been chipped off the rock face where it was discovered, sometime between its discovery in 1968 and 1972, when the initial research team returned to the area. It resurfaced recently in France under unclear circumstances. Dominique Michelet, a French archaeologist at the CNRS research center involved in recovering the piece, said Thursday the bas relief is believed to represent a priest. Michelet wouldn't say how it was found. It will be returned to Mexico for restoration and public display. The Olmec are best known for their enormous carved heads and are considered one of the founding cultures of Mesoamerica.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Puerto Vallarta
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. Here in Puerto Vallarta, HealthCare Resources is planning several wonderful and very "pink" events to raise breast cancer awareness in our community. HCRPV owner Pamela Thompson is encouraging local businesses to participate in the month-long campaign to raise breast cancer awareness by offering their clients something pink. If you own a restaurant or bar, this could be a special pink cocktail; store owners could offer special prices on pink or pink-tagged items; salons could offer specially priced manicure and/or pedicures with pink-painted nails... the opportunities for participation are limitless, so use your imagination! There is no charge to participate in this campaign, which will include participants' logos and information in all advertising and free pink ribbons to give to your customers. Nobody will ask for a fee, or prizes, or gifts, only good will. The important thing in October is to help promote the importance of early detection of breast cancer. So don't hesitate - participate!
