PV Electronics, Small Appliances Recycling Campaign

go to original
September 16, 2015

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - As part of the ecological measures taken by the Department of Municipal Services to care for our local environment, the city of Puerto Vallarta has launched another Mueve tus Electrónicos e-waste recycling campaign for the safe disposal of unused/unwanted electronics.

On Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26 9:00 am until 5:00 pm, citizens, local businesses, schools and universities can drop off unused/unwanted electronics such as televisions, fax machines, computers & associated equipment, cell phones, CD & DVD players, telephones, cables, etc.; as well as power tools, vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, electronic fans, and other small appliances for recycling at the following locations:

• Agustín Flores Contreras Sports Stadium
• Soriana Pitillal Parking Lot
• Main square of Ixtapa
• A warehouse at Avenida Francisco Villa #679 will accept larger deliveries from restaurants, hotels and schools.

They will NOT be accepting refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezers, air conditioners, lights, lamps, nor batteries.

Details of the campaign were released by Puerto Vallarta's Director of Environment and Ecology, Juan José Navarro Amaral, who noted that this is a proposal that comes from the municipal government to strengthen ongoing actions in this area which has provided the comprehensive management of approximately 35 tons of electronics. It is hoped that this collection will add 10 more tons to this figure.

Navarro Amaral added that another goal of this campaign is to raise citizen's environmental awareness and encourage them to stop depositing unwanted electronics and appliances in vacant lots, because many of them contain harmful products such as mercury and lead, which can have a profound impact on our environment.

"Many times people do not know that this type of waste should be given special treatment and they simply throw them in vacant lots or yards where they can be washed away by the rain into bodies of water and cause contamination; for this reason we are attempting to educate the public on how to properly dispose of e-waste and let them know we are here to help them," he explained.

The campaign is being carried out with the support of the Manzanillo-based Scrap Electrónicos del Pacífico recycling company, which has all the necessary permits for the integrated management of these types of wastes, and can issue the proper 'proof of destruction' certificates to businesses for tax purposes.
