Mexico Housing Program to Address Overcrowding

The Mexican government launched a $1.2 billion program to add bedrooms to half a million homes where residents suffer from overcrowding, addressing a source of health problems and domestic violence. Financing of the program will be a mixture of loans from government-run mortgage lender Infonavit and commercial banks, a government infrastructure program and direct subsidies in the case of people without Infonavit housing benefits, officials said. Infonavit also expects the program to have the support of Fideicomiso Hipotecario, or Fhipo, Mexico’s only mortgage-focused real estate investment trust which already invests in mortgages under a number of Infonavit programs. Fhipo is interested in the program, although has yet to make any final decision or determine how much it might invest, according to Daniel Braatz, Fhipo’s chief financial officer. The "one more room" program aims to benefit more than two million people mostly in urban areas that suffer from overcrowding.

World's Largest Passenger Plane Coming to Mexico City in 2016

The world's largest passenger plane is scheduled to begin servicing the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) next year, when Air France's A380 Airbus lands for the first time in Latin America at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 12, 2016. This will be the inaugural flight of Air France's three-times-a-week A380 service from Paris to Mexico City, a schedule that will be maintained until March 27, when the flights will start running daily. Work began on AICM's runways and facilities to accommodate the larger aircraft five months ago, after the airline formally notified Mexico's Communications and Transportation Secretariat that they intended to commence A380 operations in January. According to airport officials, the runway renovation expenses were minimal because some of the necessary modifications were made in 2013 in preparation for the landing of the "Queen of Heaven," a Boeing 747-8 operated by Lufthansa. In 2017, Lufthansa is expected to begin servicing Mexico City on an A380 Airbus of its own. The first commercial flight on an A380 aircraft - which carries 516 passengers, boasts 50% less cabin noise and reportedly burns 20% less fuel than the A330 - took place in 2009, between Paris and New York.
