Puerto Vallarta, Mexico News Brief & Weekend Events

June 24, 2016

From live music and theater to cultural festivals, sporting events, charitable efforts and special interest group meetings, there's always something fun happening in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around the Republic, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. Here's a look at some of this week's Mexico headlines, plus Puerto Vallarta news, community announcements and a couple of weekend events you won't want to miss.

Mexico Will Spend More Time Online in 2016

Research published by Asociación Mexicana de Internet (AMIPCI) in May 2016 reveals that internet users in Mexico will spend more time online in 2016 than they did in 2015. Users were online for 6 hours 11 minutes per day on average in 2015; that figure will reach 7 hours 14 minutes in 2016. Internet users aren't just spending more time online in Mexico—there are also more users, period. From 2014 to 2015, the percentage of the population who identified themselves as internet users climbed 8 percentage points, from 51% to 59%. The previous year's mild gain of 2 points, from 49% to 51%, suggests that internet usage may be starting to pick up across Mexico. While total usage is up in the country, both in terms of time spent online by users and the penetration rate of users themselves, a less traditional device leads the way in terms of those used to access the internet. Mobile is the first screen for many users: 77% of those surveyed said they used a smartphone to access the internet in April 2016, higher than the 69% who used a laptop or the 50% who used a desktop. eMarketer estimates that smartphone user growth from 2015 to 216 totaled 17.3%, from 37.7 million users in 2015 to 44.2 million in 2016. That figure will grow to 49.9 million in 2017, at a yearly growth rate of 13.0%. With smartphone user growth, marketers and businesses can expect that internet user penetration rates will continue to grow, as well.

Young Musicians Come Together to Entertain Puerto Vallarta

On Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26, the University of the Valley of Atemejac's (UNIVA) Youth Orchestra will be joined by young musicians from the Symphony Orchestra of San Miguel de Allende, the Cultural Institute of the León School of Music and the University of Guanajuato's Department of Music to present "Fusión Orquestal - Guanajuato / Puerto Vallarta." Fusing the talents and styles of 90 young musicians from around Mexico, these two magnificent concerts will feature an interesting combination of music from around the world. The first concert will be held on Saturday, June 25 at 8:30 pm in the Municipal Plaza of El Pitillal. An encore will be performed in downtown Puerto Vallarta at Los Arcos del Malecon on Sunday, June 26. This free concert will also begin at 8:30 pm. These unique cultural and fun presentations are thanks to the efforts of the UNIVA Youth Orchestra and Puerto Vallarta's Rotary Club Sur, who collaborated with the Puerto Vallarta Department of Culture to arranged the use of the performance venues. Come out and support our talented youth as they present "Fusión Orquestal - Guanajuato / Puerto Vallarta."

Jalisco Increases Possibility of Exporting to Canada

Jalisco producers increased their chances of exporting berries, Persian lime, chia and its derivatives, agave products, processed prickly pear, powdered honey, and packages of renewable energy to Canada after having participated in last month's Centrallia Trade Show in Winnipeg, in the Canadian province of Manitoba. The Ministry Rural Development (Seder) of Jalisco said the trade mission allowed them to strengthen the links that Jalisco has with several Canadian provinces. They said Canadian companies were seeking to eliminate intermediaries, especially from the US, as some agri-food products were not arriving in the best conditions. The marketing director of Seder, Samir Portillo Mendoza, said the companies that had been invited to participate in the trade show were those that had an exportable supply. "This trip has made it clear that the Canadians are interested in dealing directly with suppliers to get rid of a network of intermediaries that demerits the products' quality," he said. He also stated that Mexico could be sending more agro-industrial products to Canada soon.
