Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Established by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism, World Tourism Day (WTD) has been celebrated on September 27th every year since 1980.
This year's WTD theme is "Sustainable Tourism a Tool for Development," a campaign designed to encourage destinations and organizations to minimize the negative impacts and maximize the positive impacts of tourism, to the benefit of tourism and local society.
Since tourism is one of the main activities in "Mexico's Most Authentic Port," the city of Puerto Vallarta will celebrate World Tourism Day for two days, and the Municipal Tourism Department has prepared a series of activities that will make this a celebration not only of tourism but also of the people who have made outstanding contributions to the city's tourism industry and business sectors.
The festivities traditionally begin on September 26 with an opening ceremony in the courtyard of the Municipal Presidency, followed by a recognition ceremony for the people and businesses that deliver exceptional tourism services to our visitors day after day.
Though an official schedule has not yet been released, other events will be held on September 26 and 27 in different parts of the city and be organized for different sectors of society from tourist providers and students to the community in general.
