Mexico City - In times of need, celebrities are giving back.
Actress Salma Hayek announced last Wednesday that she is donating $100,000 to UNICEF to help those affected by the fatal 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Central Mexico that occurred on Tuesday, September 19 and, at press time, has killed almost 300 people.
"The people of my country have now suffered three natural disasters in a row. Many children and families are hurt and in terrible need," Hayek wrote alongside her Instagram video. "I'm contributing $100,000 now to UNICEF which has teams on the ground responding. Please join me and contribute what you can and thank you."
In the clip, the 51-year-old actress recalled the biggest earthquake in Mexican history.
"After the 1985 earthquake in Mexico City, I was evacuated from my building. A lot of my friends died, including an uncle that was very, very close to me," Hayek shared. "I have lived through the aftermath of a disaster of this magnitude, and it's horrific. I implore to your hearts, to the goodness of your hearts and your compassion to help with anything that you can give."
And Salma isn't the only Mexico-born celebrity coming to their country's aid.
In addition to donating the supplies, Alvarez assisted volunteers in his hometown of Guadalajara last Thursday in loading the provisions into trucks headed for communities affected by the earthquakes that hit central and southern Mexico earlier this month.
Alvarez's brother, Rigoberto, said the boxer told him "we have to help out and move forward."
As images of the devastation spread, other celebrities let the people of Mexico know that they were in their thoughts and prayers with Twitter messages.
Some were personally affected by the disaster, including Eva Longoria, who revealed her husband José Bastón and family were in the country's capital.
Celebrities from around the world are also joining in the disaster relief efforts, like Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling who, via Twitter, asked people to donate, writing, "Heartbreaking footage from Mexico. I was there just last month. You can donate to Oxfam's appeal, as I have, by clicking HERE."
But you don't have to be a celebrity to help the people of Mexico in their time of need.
By making a donation to any of the following NGOs - the nonprofit rescue brigade Topos México, the Mexican Red Cross, humanitarian aid org Direct Relief, crowdfunding site GlobalGiving and the United Way's Fondo Unido México - you can help provide relief to those most affected by the many natural disasters Mexico has suffered since the beginning of September.
