Flamingos Golf Club Flamingos was designed by Percy Clifford, renowned golf course architect of English descent who worked in Mexico where over the years he designed and remodelled several of the best classic courses in the country, such as Club de Golf Mexico and Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City; Princess and Pierre Marques in Acapulco; Tabachines in Cuernavaca; Bajamar in Ensenada and Avandaro in Valle de Bravo, to name a few.
Built in 1978, Flamingos is the first golf course in the Vallarta area. Surrounded by a lush tropical vegetation and over 1,800 palm trees, the unique site combines gently sloping fairways with natural lagoons, marshes and estuaries where over 100 bird species as well as crocodiles, turtles, hares, raccoons, armadillos and even several elusive deer thrive.
Flamingos Golf Club was acquired by a group of Mexican investors from a Nayarit State Government entity in October of 2000. The group also acquired 460 acres of adjacent land, which together with the Golf Course are part of the Flamingos Master Condominium development. The Development Plan for the acquired real estate will be announced and presented to the public in the near future. The Development Plan includes a gated community with residential lots and fairway homes, beach front hotels and condominiums, beach and sports clubs, commercial property as well as a land reserve for an additional golf course with 9 or possibly 18 new holes.
Since the acquisition of Flamingos Golf Club, the new management team has undertaken a three-year, US$3 million renovation program. The program includes investments in a new fleet of maintenance equipment, new golf carts, remodelling of the club house and guest facilities, improvement of cart paths, a completely new pumping station and wall-to-wall automated irrigation system as well as over half a mile of drainage systems.
From a playing standpoint, the goal has been to return this wonderful course to its original layout and dimensions. Recovery of 10 championship tees that had been lost to the jungle have been brought back the challenge for the best golfers, resulting in a par 71 of 6,982 yards. An additional 12 new tees, which were adequately repositioned, offer the ladies a more enjoyable yet challenging course. The reconstruction of the greens and bunkers, as well as further improvements in the tees has been initiated and will be the focus of the work in the following 12 months.
The most demanding aspect of the renovation program has been the improvement of the playing surface. Ecologically sound best practices in turf management and maintenance have been implemented to offer a first-class playing surface from tee to green in every hole. In this respect, the creation of a 5-acre turf nursery has been essential in the continuing effort to improve the fairways and rough, with over 1 million square feet of turf recovered to date.
The landscaping and tree management programs will continue, with the commitment to preserve the lagoon, estuary and marsh environments which are unmatched by any other golf course in Vallarta.
Flamingos Golf Club offers a unique golfing experience in a challenging but enjoyable classic design course for players of all skill levels. There is no question that its natural landscape and maturity, as well as its green fee value make Flamingos one of the most attractive golfing options in the Puerto Vallarta area.
