Dear Mom...
email this pageprint this pageemail usJamie Doty - PVNN

Jamie's first Mother's Day card - 1988
When you look up the word Mother in the dictionary, this is what you may find:

moth·er [noun] - A woman who conceives, gives birth to, or raises and nurtures a child.

When I looked in the dictionary, nowhere did I find the name Donna under the definition for "Mother." Nor could I find Gina or Jenny - or any other mother's name that I know of. What is the definition of mother? It sure as hell can not be summed up by saying, "a woman who conceives, gives birth to, or raises and nurtures a child." That's it? That's what it means to be a mother? Wow... That's easy!

So what exactly is a mother? I can't tell you what exactly a mother is any better than the dictionary does. But what I can tell you, or at least try to describe to you, is what the word Mother means to me. I can best describe my mother to you by giving you my definition of the word "mommy"...

For me, a "Mother" is a person who, even though I may have thought I'd shown appreciation to my entire life, at some point I realized that I had only begun to understand the word "appreciation" towards a mother, my mother. My mother is among the most amazing things that I have known in my life.

Mothers are indeed incredible, my Mother being one of those women. With my mom in mind, mothers can do anything. There are the obvious characteristics that make mine incredible - like juggling that hectic life of raising three kids, as hellish as we may all have been.

Mothers can drive us from school, and games, and parties, and work - day after day after day again. Wait! My Mother ALSO worked for a living WHILE doing all this driving? How? Mothers can juggle a cell phone, make a business deal, and fix an engine while putting dinner on the table.

Mothers know how to make people feel welcome, feel smart, feel pretty and confident. Mothers know when to step into tough situations and when to back off. Mothers know what's best (I know it took me a while to admit this - but it's true!) Mothers know when you are hiding something, when to ask, and where to draw the line.

Mothers are best at being your friend, your best friend, and I am thankful for that. Mothers can turn a dull story into a theatrical production. Mothers are there for you when you are feeling down. Mothers help you get though the tough times - even when you think you are all grown up, but you're only 20 and still need your mommy.

Mothers are there to count on, to run to, to lean on. (Mothers are stronger than you, that's why you can lean on them.) Mothers make everything look easy, they never show signs of stress, they keep things bottled inside to make your day better. Mothers don't have stress, you see... they are moms.

Mothers are fathers and they sometimes make the best fathers children can have. Mothers are there for you to call [for the 20th time] when you cannot remember how to bake salmon. Mothers are there to go to when you have spent 10 hours installing a stereo and still can't make it work, and when asked, she waves her hand and says "check the fuses..."

Mothers simply know everything. Mothers are the ones who after only 5 minutes of having your email address floods you with "bottom of the barrel" email jokes. No... Mothers do not write them...

This may not be the definition to describe every Mother, because I only know how to describe one. I only know how to describe the most wonderful, incredible, irresistible, beautiful, smart and amazing Mother I know . . . My mother. When you look up the word Mother, or just the word Donna in a dictionary made by me, you will find this definition: my mother, my mommy.

I know Mother's Day has past, but I didn't want to wait for another year to tell you that I love you and can not stop thinking about you and wondering if you are all right. I love you mom, I know you're strong and everything will be all right. Just don't forget to take a deep breath and know I am here for you, every hour of every day, every second of the night, for you to talk to or lean on. We'll be okay . . . I love you tremendously.

With all the hugs and kisses in the world....
