Mexican Environment Secretary Resigns to Seek Presidency Associated Press
| Environment Secretary Alberto Cardenas | Mexico City – Environment Secretary Alberto Cardenas resigned on Thursday to seek the presidential nomination of President Vicente Fox's National Action Party.
Cardenas, a 47-year-old industrial engineer, was governor of the western state of Jalisco from 1995 until 2001, and became Fox's top environmental official in September 2003.
He follows Interior Secretary Santiago Creel into the race. The president named environmental prosecutor Jose Luis Luege to take over Cardenas' post.
The race for the National Action nomination already included former Chihuahua Gov. Francisco Barrio and ex-legislator and party chief Felipe Calderon. Fox ended 71 straight years of single-party rule when he beat the Institutional Ruling Party at the polls in 2000.
Cardenas told reporters he was confident of winning National Action's nomination for the July 2006 election, saying "I will promote and defend the successes and advances that we have achieved."
Fox on Wednesday called Cardenas "a great defender of democracy" and instructed Luege to "protect the natural capital of our country with effective policies that create a culture of environmental protection."
National Action will chose its presidential nominee in three stages of voting between September and October. If no candidate wins a majority, another round of voting will take place in November. |
