Principal Terrorist Actions Against Cuba (1990-2005)

1990 14 October: TERRORIST INFILTRATION. Terrorists GUSTAVO RODRIGUEZ SOSA and TOMAS RAMOS RODRIGUEZ, members of the terrorist organization PUND (National Democratic Unity Party) infiltrate Havana through Santa Cruz del Norte. They had planned terrorist actions but were arrested.
1991 17 September: TERRORIST INFILTRATION. Two terrorists from Miami infiltrate Cuba to sabotage tourist stores, They were arrested with their weapons and a shortwave radio.
29 December: TERRORIST INFILTRATION. Terrorists of Cuban-origin: EDUARDO DIAZ BETANCOURT, DANIEL CANDELARIO SANTOVENIA FERNANDEZ, and PEDRO DE LA CARIDAD ALVAREZ PEDROSO, infiltrated Cuba through La Sierrita, in Cardenas, Matanzas. They were captured and confessed plans to sabotage economic installations, public service establishments and public recreation facilities.
1992 4 July: ATTEMPTED PIRATE ATTACK. A group of terrorists proceeding from the US tried to attack economic objectives on the Havana coast. When they were detected by Cuban patrols they took off for waters near Varadero where their boat had mechanical problems and they were rescued by the US Coast Guard. Although they had weapons, maps and videos made during the trip they were released by the FBI.
7 October: PIRATE ATTACK. The Hotel "Melia Varadero" in Matanzas was attacked by an armed motorboat belonging to the terrorist organization "Comandos L", which caused considerable damage in several places. The terrorists of Cuban-origin that took part in this act of piracy were: GUILLERMO CASASUS TOLEDO, MIGUEL HERNANDEZ and JESUS ARECES BOLIVAR.
19 October: TERRORIST INFILTRATION. Three terrorists proceeding from the US were arrested with weapons and a great deal of military equipment. Another three were arrested in the Bahamas with weapons and explosives having left Miami October 17 apparently headed for Cuba.
1993 2 April: PIRATE ATTACK AGAINST A MERCHANT SHIP. The “MYKONOS”, flying a Maltese flag and with a Cuban-Cypriot crew, was machine gunned 7 miles north of Matanzas when it was transporting oil from Matanzas to Port Carupano in Las Tunas. The action was perpetrated by the Cuban-origin terrorist organization EAS, Secret Armed Army, based in Florida. The terrorists participating were: RIGOBERTO ACOSTA DIAZ, JOSE MÉNDEZ MIRABAL, GUILLERMO CASASUS TOLEDO and RAFAEL CARRERA MANSO.
2 September: TERRORIST ARRESTED. Mexican US-resident MARIO GARCIA RUBALCAVA, with ties to “ALPHA 66”, was arrested in Cuba when he came to commit terrorist actions and admitted to planning to assassinate Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro.
1994 11 March: PIRATE ATTACK. “ALPHA 66” terrorists, on a motorboat proceeding from the US, used a Cal50 machine gun against the Ciego de Avila Guitart-Cayo Coco Hotel.
4 September: TERRORIST INFILTRATION. Terrorists JOSE BENITO MENENDEZ DEL VALLE and IRELlO MARCELINO BARROSO MEDINA infiltrated Cuba through Cayo Palo Quemado, on the northern coast off Caibarien, the two, belonging to DIN "Nationalist Insurrectionist Board," were arrested with weapons.
6 October: SECOND PIRATE ATTACK AGAINST HOTEL. The Guitart-Cayo Coco Hotel in Ciego de Avila was again machine-gunned by a motorboat coming from the US. The attack was attributed to terrorist organization "ALPHA 66".
15 October: TERRORIST INFILTRATION. MURDER. Cuban citizen ARCILIO RODRIGUEZ GARCIA, was murdered in Caibarien, Villa Clara, by members of a terrorist counter-revolutionary commando PUND “National Democratic Unity Party”: ARMANDO SOSA FORTUNY, LAZARO GONZALEZ CARABALLO, PEDRO GUISAO PENA, JOSE RAMON FALCON GONZALEZ, JESUS MANUEL ROJAS PINEDA, MIGUEL DIAZ BOUZA and HUMBERTO REAL SUAREZ. The terrorists planned to establish themselves in the Escambray Mountains to organize terrorist actions and destabilize the country. They were found with five AK-47s, one AR-15 rifle, one M-14 automatic, four pistols and ammunition for these weapons.
11 November: TERRORIST INFILTRATION. Four PUND "National Democratic Unity Party" (PUND) terrorists were arrested when they infiltrated Varadero on a boat carrying arms and ammunition.
1995 2 March: TERRORIST INFILTRATION. US-residents, terrorists SANTOS ARMANDO MARTINEZ RUEDA and JOSE ENRIQUEZ RAMIREZ ORO, brought explosive materiel into Las Tunas through Port Padre and left the same area on March 8.
20 March: TERRORISTS ARRESTED. Terrorists SANTOS ARMANDO MARTINEZ RUEDA and JOSE ENRIQUEZ RAMIREZ ORO were arrested in the Jose Marti International Airport after having entered the country March 12 with false Costa Rican passports and placed a bomb in the Sol Palmeras Hotel on the orders of the terrorist “CUBAN-AMERICAN NATIONAL FOUNDATION”. The bomb was de-activated.
20 May: THIRD PIRATE ATTACK AGAINST HOTEL. The Guitart-Cayo Coco Hotel in Ciego de Avila was again machine-gunned by an “ALPHA 66” motorboat coming from the US.
1996 12 January: TERRORIST ARRESTED. A Cuban US-resident, member of the “Cuban Political Prison National Front”, was arrested when he brought a plastic C-4 explosive from Havana to Pinar del Rio.
11 February: PIRATE ATTACK. Shots were fired at the Melia Las Americas Hotel from a rapidly moving vessel that entered Cuban waters during the night. The perpetrators were the terrorists MARCELINO RODRIGUEZ VAZQUEZ, JOEL CANO DIAZ and EFRAIN ROBERTO RIVAS HERNANDEZ, members of the terrorist PUND “National Democratic Unity Party”. They were captured.
21 August: TERRORIST ARRESTED. US citizen WALTER KELSEY VAN DER VEER came to Cuba posing as a tourist, but planned to organize terrorist plots. During his trial he said he belonged to the terrorist organization "COMANDOS L".
17 September: TERRORIST INFILTRATION. Terrorist of Cuban-origin PEDRO PABLO PULIDO ORTEGA was captured after he infiltrated through Cambas in Ciego de Avila with a cargo of weapons, ammunition and other materiel for terrorist actions. The materiel was to have been given to terrorist NOEL RAMOS ROJAS, who had entered the country legally. They belonged to the counter-revolutionary US organization “Provisional Cuba-Government Project”.
1997 12 April: TERRORIST ACT. An explosive device was detonated in the men´s room of the Ache discotheque in the Melia Cohiba Hotel. The bomber was Salvadoran terrorist FRANCISCO CHAVEZ ABARCA.
30 April: TERRORIST ACT FRUSTRATED. Salvadoran terrorist FRANCISCO CHAVEZ ABARCA placed an explosive device on the 15th floor of the Melia Cohiba Hotel that was de-activated.
24 May: TERRORIST ACT ON FOREIGN SOIL. A device exploded in the entrance of Cubanacan Tourist Agency in Mexico City. Coincidently, Salvadoran terrorist FRANCISCO CHAVEZ ABARCA was in Mexico at the time.
12 July: TERRORIST ACT. Four people were injured and the buildings were damaged when bombs exploded in the Capri and Nacional hotels. The perpetrator was Salvadoran terrorist RAUL ERNESTO CRUZ LEON.
3 August: TERRORIST ACT ON FOREIGN SOIL. A bomb exploded in the entrance to the Havanatur Tourist Agency office in the Bahamas that damaged the office and adjoining facilities.
4 August: TERRORIST ACT IN HOTEL. A bomb exploded in the Melia Cohiba Hotel damaging the building. The perpetrator was Salvadoran terrorist OTTO RENE RODRIGUEZ LLERENA.
22 August: TERRORIST ACT IN HOTEL. An explosive device is detonated in the Sol Palmeras Hotel in Varadero damaging the building. The bombers were Guatemalan terrorists JORGE VENANCIO RUIZ and MARLON ANTONIO GONZALEZ ESTRADA.
4 September: TERRORIST ACTS IN HOTELS. One person died and seven were injured when a bomb exploded in the lobby bar of the Copacabana Hotel in Havana. Italian citizen FABIO DI CELMO was killed. Damage was sustained by that hotel, by the bombing at the Bodeguita del Medio restaurant, as well as by the bombs in the lobbies of the Triton and Chateau Miramar hotels. The bomber was Salvadoran terrorist RAUL ERNESTO CRUZ LEON.
19 October: FRUSTRATED TERRORIST ACT. An explosive device was found and de-activated in a plastic bucket on a tourist minibus. The would-be bombers were Guatemalan terrorists JORGE VENANCIO RUIZ and MARLON ANTONIO GONZALEZ ESTRADA.
30 October: FRUSTRATED TERRORIST ACT. An explosive device hidden under a kiosk in Terminal 2 of the Jose Marti International Airport was found and de-activated. The bombers were the same as the attempt on Oct 19, Guatemalan terrorists JORGE VENANCIO RUIZ and MARLON ANTONIO GONZALEZ ESTRADA.
1998 4 March: FRUSTRATED TERRORIST ACTS. The discovery and opportune arrest of Guatemalan terrorists NADER CAMAL MUSALAM BARAKAT and MARIA ELENA GONZALEZ MEZA, and seizure of their equipment for preparing explosives, upon their arrival at the Jose Marti International Airport prevented their planned terrorist attacks on tourist centers and public places of the capital.
19 May: TERRORISTS ARRESTED. US residents, terrorists ERNESTINO ABREU HORTA and VICENTE MARCELINO MARTINEZ RODRIGUEZ landed by boat on the Pinar del Rio coast with the mission, among others, of creating a core of bandits in the mountains of that region. They were arrested May 28 and their weapons and other war material confiscated.
10 June: TERRORIST ARRESTED. Salvadoran terrorist OTTO RENE RODRIGUEZ LLERENA was arrested at Jose Marti International Airport when he tried to bring in plastic explosive, detonator capsules and other terrorist materiel.
2001 26 April: INFILTRATION ATTEMPT AND ARREST OF 3 TERRORISTS IN VILLA CLARA. Miami residents connected with the terrorist organizations "Comandos F-4" and "Alpha 66", IHOSVANI SURIS DE LA TORRE, SANTIAGO PADRON QUINTERO and MAXIMO PRADERA VALDES were arrested when they tried to infiltrate Cuba through northern Villa Clara to execute terrorist actions against Havana tourist installations.
They admitted and identified, through photographs and videos, Miami residents of Cuban origin SANTIAGO ALVAREZ FERNANDEZ-MAGRINA, NELSY IGNACIO CASTRO MATOS And RUBÉN DARIO LOPEZ CASTRO participated in the leadership, organization and financing of this operation. |
