Mexico: Stop Helms-Burton Prensa Latina

(AP/Marco Ugarte) | Mexico - Hundreds of Mexican academics and social leaders demand from the government to exact the US to stop implementing its anti-Cuban laws, in a letter they have submited to the Foreign Ministry (FM) Thursday.
The Mexican Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (MMSC) said the action will follow the second political rally at midday in front of the FM headquarters to protest the Cuban delegation´s ousting February 3 by Maria Isabel Sheraton Hotel management following orders from the US administration.
The letter´s handing-over is part of a MMSC permanent campaign to inform and mobilize the national and international public over the incident.
The text, also signed by members of the Mexican Chapter of the Defense of Humanity Movement, calls outrageous the response of President Vicente Fox´s administration after the expulsion of the 16-strong Cuban delegation.
"The application in Mexico of the extraterritorial Helms-Burton law is a blatant violation of national sovereignty, aimed at eternalizing the criminal US blockade of Cuba," the document affirms.
It states the Executive must firmly protest Washington´s action through a diplomatic note defending national dignity and honor while stressing the Sheraton Hotel should obey Mexican laws to continue operating.
Among personalities who signed the note appear Pablo Gonzalez Casanova, Ana Esther Ceceña, Carlos Fazio, Enrique Gonzalez Ruiz, Gilberto Lopez y Rivas, Guillermo Almeria and Hector de la Cueva.
Implementation of the US Helms-Burton law, passed March 1996, has been widely snubbed by national sectors, including leaders of the governing National Action Party.
However, Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez precluded sending a letter to the White House as he considers national sovereignty was not violated. |
