Vallarta Festival Nautico Intro
Vallarta Festival Nautico '06 Schedule
Vallarta '06 (Feb 21-March 1)

Of course, a 1000 nm ocean race is not the most accessible spectator sport. However, this is the first year that the Big Boats will have a fully automatic transponder on board that will communicate the boat's GPS coordinates, speed, and heading every 3 hours to this website: www.fistracking.com. The first of the Big Boats is expected to cross the finish line at Punta de Mita on or around February 28th. Watch from the beach or on the water. Who will be first? Boats to watch are Scout Spirit, Peligroso, and Mongoose.

Governor's Boat Parade (March 4)

Grab a morning coffee and settle in on the Malecon. The Parade is expected to start around 10:30 and end around 1:30. Watch for best decorated pangas, sailboats, yachts, mega-yachts, and commercial boats. Trophies will be awarded for each category. Be a part of the Parade. Call Luigi Corsi at 297-1040, to reserve a spot on the Princess Yelapa.

Governor's Cup Yacht Race (March 4)

Great viewing from the Malecon and the Hotel Zone for this race that starts at 2:00 pm from Puerta Vallarta. Watch for those big spinnakers flying on the downwind leg from Los Arcos. Cameras ready!

Wesmex (March 3, 4, 5)

Sixty-eight percent of all 2002 Olympic Sailing medalists had a six-foot Optimist somewhere in their past. This exciting formative event can best be viewed from the beach at Paradise Village, daily at noon. Who to watch? Diego Reyes is the 2005 South American champion; the Ortiz Vivas kids: Cristina, Andrea and Federico all received medals in the 2005 Mexican Junior Olympics and 2005 Challenge Cup.

MEXORC (March 5, 6, 7, 9, 10)

The Big Boats race twice a day for four days with a layday on the 8th. Check the schedule for course layouts. Best viewing overall is from ETC. Beach Club in Nuevo Vallarta, or charter one of Vallarta's many commercial charter boats for an up-close look. Who to watch in this race? U.S. Big Boats Magnitude and Sorcery; from Acapulco, China Cloud and Wasabi; locals boats: Dreadnought, the only all female team, Chivos, Something Wicked, and Barlovento, last year's winner.

Festival Nautico continues through the entire month of March, ending with the Banderas Bay Regatta March 30th - April 2nd. For more information on events, visit www.banderasbayregatta.com or www.vallartayachtclub.com.
